The
Arab world has been self-sufficient in textiles for centuries. Egypt
produced linen and cotton, Syria and Lebanon produced silks and Iraq
produced the fine Najafy wool and also some cotton and silk. Jordan produced dyes including indigo and sumac. In Palestine linen thread imported from Egypt was woven in Majdal, Ramallah, Bethlehem and Hebron. Cotton cultivated in Galilee and Jericho was woven locally. Syria has been “the silk cocoon” since Byzantine times. It catered to the Arab world with silk fabric for costumes and special items such as belts and headdresses for women and men. |
